What are Shiny Pokémon?
Shiny Pokémon are recognized as alternative, canonical color variations for each creature. Typically, every Pokémon adheres to a standard color palette in its design, with only a few exceptions like Jinx making early adjustments. In the main Pokémon games, Shiny Pokémon stand out as the sole occurrence where these iconic creatures exhibit colors different from their usual appearances. There are no rigid patterns to these variations, and in some cases, the changes barely alter the hue of a Pokémon's color scheme—examples include Gengar and Garchomp. At their best, Shiny Pokémon showcase color changes that still harmonize with the original design of the respective Pokémon.
Just how rare are Shiny Pokémon?
This has changed throughout the years and is different in every game actually.
In Generation II, a Pokémon randomly assigned 5 integers between 0 and 15 to determine their base stats. (HP, Attack, Defense, Special, and Speed). If all 5 numbers are equal to 10, the Pokémon's color scheme will be set to 0. The chance of seeing a shiny Pokémon is 1 in every 8192 (165), or a probability of 0.012% during each encounter. From Gen 3 onwards, shiny Pokémon are determined by other factors such as the Trainer ID number and the personality value of the Pokémon. Despite this change, the odds of randomly encountering a shiny Pokémon is still 1 in 8192.
